I thought Tilt-Shift was the description of my snowboarding technique. But this is better: Touring a tilt-shifted Jackson Hole mountain resort accompanied by a party-mix of Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’ http://bit.ly/eFdgs3. Black diamonds are a muse’s best friend.

This is a little bit different entry for what is typically a visually-centric blog about mind candy, but bear with me…

I can’t say for certain, but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if, when the creative teams at Weiden & Kennedy are looking for a snappy new–yet obscure–pop tune to layer into a TV commercial-slash-cultural touchstone they’re producing, they tune in to local alternative station 94/7 KNRK.

94/7 is the stalwart bastion of alternative in Portland, as it has been for more than decade. Two of my go-to features of the station are Sunday evening programs Passport Approved and The Bottom 40. Passport Approved is a regular feature of Portland radio station 94.7 KNRK, wherein host Sat Bisla spins an eclectic mix of imports (and by import, I mean both that they are significant, and that they hail from overseas). You should listen to it.

The Bottom 40 has been a favorite of mine, and “appointment radio” for several years. Every week, show host Greg Glover presents new music, obscure classics, interviews and more. As he tells it:

The Bottom Forty is where listeners hear new music (Yeasayer, Surfer Blood, The xx), deep tracks from “classic” alternative artists (XTC, Talking Heads, The Replacements), as well as the “unusual” (Isaac Hayes, Eno, Hank Sr.). Throw in an insightful and original interview with an up-and-coming or legendary artist along with useful information and you have just one example of a single “issue” of The Bottom Forty…”

Greg Glover is a cool guy, and is to alternative music what Googlemaps is to getting where you’re going.

For a full multimedia experience, while you’re listening to The Bottom 40 or Passport Approved, sync up with the online version of Trouser Press, where you can get news and background on some your favorite performers, and their musical family trees.

This blog started out as an extension of something I used to do in a few shops where I worked: Every morning I would send a link to all the creatives of something cool to look at. I called it “It’s [fill in the day], do you know where your muse is?” A phrase stolen from a subscription call to action a friend of mine did for Communication Arts. I don’t know where he stole it from.

Anyway…there’s a slight possibility I could get back to posting something everyday, which would be nice. And there is certainly no shortage of wondrous and magical things in the world to look at, and be inspired by. But, one day at a time.

So hey, it’s a random Thursday in March. Do you know where your muse is? This is a collection of a couple dozen spiral or hellical staircase images; 20 cool staircases and four creepy ones. Hat tip to Lava360 for bringing these to my attention (via Twitter).
